Don Felder Comments on the Documentary

Here are two stories where Felder was asked about his participation in History of the Eagles

Don Felder Looks Back on the Eagles (Ultimate Classic Rock)

History of the Eagles isn't the Full Story (Billboard)

Reader Comments (111)

seems to me after reading felders interview and the fact that when he reaches out to the guys, he gets attorney responses: glenn frey is the "asshole", not felder.
watching the documentary and seeing frey and henley continuously bash felder and demean his " just guitar riffs" creativity was in bad taste. the greatest song on the album is hotel california and felder should get half the credit. just like walsh should get half the credit for fastlane. ITS A BAND LIKE FELDER SAID!
contrributions from all members, not 2 and the others can "fuck off" in freys quote.
i have seen them all solo and together since 1980 with the little river band 50 times. i am qualiffied to make this statement... glenn frey is the greedy, asshole, former druggie and henley is a greedy prick as well. they need to leave their political aspirations out of the band. i agree with felder.
they are all supurb and not interchangable meaning stuart is certainly no felder.
felder got fucked by some greedy old men pushing 70. right glenn?

i also agree with Felder, but the remarks here up above are a bit hard and not so nice.
yes, everybody has there on oppion about what happend.
there are three lines to evey story, that yours, that my, and the truth.

the eagles are in my oppion not about the music anymore, they don`t play for fun, they play for the money, and noting else, it`s a bussiuenss, a factory, like you and me goning to a job, to make money.
that`s The Eagles today, it`s not cald Eagles Inc for nothing.

February 23, 2013 | Unregistered Commentermarcel

you think the remarks above are harsh? but its not harsh for frey to call felder the "biggest asshole" on the planet in the documentary. are you kidding me? frey came back because he had to in 94. he knew his solo career was finished and knew how lucrative the eagles gig was. lets be real. it was about the money back then, not just now. spontaneous play during their concerts is virtually non-existant. frey's new show is to promote the afetr hours record which sucks. 2 decent tunes and the rest of it just sucks.caroline and route 66.
he even said in the show in st pete i went to a few months ago he didnt even want to do the old solo stuff. joe walsh is the only decent man in the group and cares what he puts out for his fans. i have video proof from the cohasset gig last july. you know whats funny? FREY TALKING TOUGH DURING THE COCUMENTARY IS HILARIOUS !
never been in a fist fight in his life and yet hes gonna kill felder, too funny. this guys got a nanny and a butler for his nanny and butler. hes a greedy cowardly shitbag. thats the truth. fuck frey and henley!

As much as I am a fan of Don Henley and have been since The Eagles got started and also meeting him both at Wembley Arena in 89 and Linden 2004 I do have to agree we all previous comments here apart from the swear words.

I do find it sad and yes childish that Don and Glenn cannot bring it upon themselves to make up with Don Felder before the good Lord calls time. I am especially surprised at Joe even if he has to play along with Don and Glenn.
Joe and DF were I understand once upon a time really good friends and now not a that is sad.

Living here in the UK I have not yet seen the full Documentary but friends who live in the USA who have seen it find some of the remarks made about Don Felder as very upsetting bearing in mind how like me they have been fans since the early 70`s.

For pity sake Don and Glenn and yes Irving life is too damn short to bare a grudge against someone and believe me I know how it churns you up inside. As a fan please think about it and make up with Don Felder if not for yourself for the fans who love every member of The Eagles old and new.

The Sad Cafe was a fitting end to The Long Run and should have been a fitting end to The Eagles. Hell Freezes Over was nice but in 19 years they have done nothing memorable. They've almost damaged their legacy with all the fighting and controversy. When is the last time you put on Long Road Out Of Eden? Probably the day you bought it and now it sits there collecting dust. I loved the old footage from the documentary, but it focused more on their egos I thought. It seems like Joe and Timmy won't have any contact with Felder out of fear for their jobs and that is sad. And Irving Azoff simply rode the coat tails of these guys since the day he latched on. To me The Eagles are incomplete without Don Felder. They are now a tribute to themselves, playing in suits, never changing the set list, never being spontaneous, I find it very sad. To me it was Felder and Walsh that gave The Eagles their sound. I'm sure there's a Brinks truck behind every concert hall along with the tour buses and semis. You can't watch that documentary and come out of it really liking Frey or Henley. It was a band, not 2 guys, it was a band.

I think Frey and Henley come off as disingenuous in that not much is mentioned about the friction between them. I remember Frey saying in an interview in the early 1990's that he did not like Henley. In Heaven and Hell, there is mention of Henley calling Frey an "asshole" when he was stricken with diverticulitis during Hell Freezes Over. The only mention, I believe, was JD Souther saying that the rift carried over to him as he had little contact with Frey after the 1970's. I truly believe that Frey at the root of ALL the friction in the band. It seems that only Walsh and Schmit are able to coexist with him without much tension. Sorry.....but Frey comes off as a major asshole. I also have to agree with Craig, in part, as the Eagles should have packed it in after HFO. Long Road Out of Eden was laughable except for Waiting in the Weeds.

finally some fans who agree with me. i thought i was the only one. especially on this site where even the administrator thinks frey and henley are gods. the black suits was absurd. the eagles walking threw the desert with black suits and ties was pretty funny. im sure frey gave the OK on that one. the deal with walmart was another howl. henley and all his bull shit with walden woods and his political stance against ruburt and the media and going green and coorporate greed and he makes a deal with walmart to release eden is hypocracy at its finest. hinestly i dont know why i spend the money on a ticket. they are so out of touch with the fans because they could give a shit, the upcoming tour will be the same ol same ol except a screen behind them with 1975 one of these nights then 1977 new kid in town etc...bringing bernie back who most dont even know. felder was the best choice to bring back.. what are they thinking? how are they going to make the audience now think they are having fun up there after releasing that documentary? how? they came off and are the greediest assholes walking the planet and certainly dont deserve the $ or attention..

February 24, 2013 | Unregistered Commentera fan

The obvious thing here is the guys are arguing over money, not art or creativity like they would have you believe. If it really was about art they would all have kissed and made up,so I have to say that both parties are to blame in that respect.Felder then went out and wrote a book and made the whole thing personal by doing so I believe this was a mistake on his part and for that reason they will never reconcile.I haven't seen the documentary yet but I will say that Frey and Henley have their right to defend themselves and to their credit they invited everyone else to speak so we shouldn't be too critical,I like others wish Felder was still there and yeah Frey and Henley do come off like assholes but it wasn't entirely their fault I used to think as much though. At the end of the day money talks bullshit walks. How will these guys ever get over this? You tell me.

February 25, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersharkayla0508

I forgot to mention that I think the documentary was made out of retaliation for Felder's book. There was no way they were going to let him have the final say on what it was like to be an Eagle. And boy did they give it to him in the film. I felt they were disrespectful, granted the book was harsh but enough already. I wonder if for some crazy reason they came calling would Felder get back into this? Oh well, never going to happen anyway. I guess Bernie and his banjo will be the suprise guest on the next tour. Maybe they can do "Earlybird", such a fan favorite. And yes the black suits were ridiculous, as well as the horn section.

February 25, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCraig

Who cares about the black suits. It seems to me some people here are looking for any little thing to criticize the Eagles for. You may as well quit belly aching about the Felder thing, because its all water under the bridge and its never going to happen no matter how much you squawk.

It's great that people are sharing their opinions about the documentary. That being said, we'd like to remind people that we do have a comment policy here and that some of the recent comments have come close to crossing the line in terms of language and fostering a sense of community. We also don't like our ideas being misrepresented. To help keep the conversation productive, we'd like to remind you all of the following:

1. Read the comment policy. We've made it more visible by putting it over in the right-hand side bar.

2. When you scream in all caps at members of the band, you really aren't accomplishing anything. Band members aren't reading the comments on this site.

3. It's easier to have discuss things when your comments aren't rants that state your opinion as unwavering fact.

4. People can understand your point better if you take a few minutes to spell-check your comments and make sure that they make sense.

5. Don't speak for others or assume you know the opinions of others...including the admins.

As we said, it's great that people want to have a discussion, but several of these comments lately haven't seemed to promote an exchange of ideas.

I'm gong to be the lone dissenter I guess. I am not the boss of anyone's underpants but mine so this isn't me telling anyone what to think. I think Long Road Out of Eden is awesome. I play it every day, especially the first 7 songs. Seriously - every day. I went to the LROE concerts twice, once I paid to be on the second row and once I drove 4 hours stopping every hour to nurse my 13 month old twins in the back of the car at truck stops. When we were on the 2nd row we were hearing actual voices and not just speakers. These guys still have it. Perfection. I was completely blown away . I hate they're not doing those songs in concert anymore. It's my 2nd favorite to OOTN. I liked the suits mostly because it was eye candy. I didn't see what the big deal was about wearing them or not. I really didn't go to a concert to see them - I went to hear them.

To me Don & Glenn come across as trying to keep the band moving forward and sometimes I guess that means firing people holding you back. It does in any business really. The Eagles wouldn't have been anything resembling the Eagles if not for them. Someone could have filled in for the other guys and the Eagles would have probably been close to the same. Don and Glenn are irreplaceable in my opinion. And they were more successful & visible in the 80's. They had been talking of a new album for a long time but it seemed like once Felder was gone they were able to actually make and finish the album. Like he was what was holding them back. To quote South Park, "turd in the punch bowl."

I read these interviews - cringe-worthy. I read Felder's book. He seemed like an unappreciative whiny baby in the whole thing. I barely got through it his attitude was so bad. Everything was such drama and such a big deal and woe is me. "Oh I'm in the greatest band ever and have a devoted wife who I run around on and have all the drugs I want but life is so hard." Really? He got to be an Eagle for crying out loud. He just never seemed happy with what he had in the book. And then his wife got a successful business going and he leaves her for being successful and not spending her time worshiping him. Really? She put up with a lot it seemed like and he didn't seem to appreciate her either. I know there's so many people who are all about that book and think it's the gospel truth and think Felder's so awesome but I just didn't see it. Any sympathy I had for him went out the window when I read that awful book. Get over yourself!

I'm interested in who the guest former member will be on the next tour does anyone know who it is?

February 26, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersharkayla0508

Henley said in an interview that Bernie Leadon is the one they're trying to get back for at least some shows.

February 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterL&M

As a European I haven't seen the documentary yet. To be honest I'm more looking forward to the concert footage/setlist. I hope for Seven Bridges Road, Witchy Woman (with a guitar solo by GF) and Best of my Love with DF on pedal steel and JD Souther as guest singer (by the way his 'Natural History' cd incl. New Kid in Town/Best of my Love/Sad Cafe is perfect.) Though it's probable the concert sound will have been tempered with; 1. we know they're perfectionists right?; 2. the footage came out of their own archives 3. the technical/digitable means for adding vocals/licks and deleting faults are there 4. their so called 'live' recordings which have been officially released are impossibly faultless 4. studio playing can also be called 'live' in a way (sorry I'm a lawyer). The closest recording we'll probably have to their real live performance is the bootleg footage on a rainy New Zealand night in 1995 (Christchurch).

its ok for the god, "frey" to use vulgarity but not a fan on this site. LOL a song is simply made up of music and lyrics. when one person creates the music and the other person writes the lyrics then the two should "share" any fruits that bare of that song. simple as that. the one that writes the lyrics cannot take credit for the song and then belittle the music. this is what your "god" frey did in the doc pertainling to only felder.
felder wrote the book because he was FIRED! the book was the only deal he had on the table. he didnt want to do it. he had no choice, dont blame him a bit.
because frey said felder was never happy doesnt mean that was true, does it? frey was a coke head and if you know anything about snit, it makes you lie ALOT.
felder is a guitar god, hes right there with clapton in my opinion. totally underrated and you clueless posters on here who think stewart is a better fit are touched. you are the ones who are content going to a show thats the same jukebox play over and over again.omg i know the set list by heart. its beyond old.

February 26, 2013 | Unregistered Commentera fan

A fan...

Was your comment deleted? It was not, so please stop stating things that are not true. The comment policy says "overly vulgar or profane language". Your comment wasn't deleted so obviously, there was no problem with your use of the word "asshole".

What I have more of a problem with is you denegrading other posters by calling them "clueless" and "touched". I also have a problem with you articulating what other poster's opinions are for them. For example, Glenn Frey is not MY "god"...neither is Don Henley for that matter.

This is a site for fans to "discuss"...not to belittle each other or state their own personal opinion as if it is 100% unarguable fact.

February 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterEaglesfans

which statement was "untrue"?
felder vs stuart playing felders guitar riffs.....who do you prefer? isnt it an obvious choice? as i said i am well qualified to make "true" statements here. anyone who has seen them more than i including solo shows are band members, manager or roadies.

February 27, 2013 | Unregistered Commentera fan

You've made several untrue statements:

That it wasn't okay for you to post vulgarity. It was fine as has been pointed out to you.

That the admins consider Henley and Frey to be "gods"

And if your earlier statement that you've seen the band and solo members a total of 50 times is true, then it is also untrue that the only people around here who have seen them more than you are band members, managers or roadies. It isn't a contest, but you are not the only person in this community who has a valid opinion.

February 27, 2013 | Registered CommenterEaglesfans

For the first time since the first day I heard an Eagles song I have to say I have suddenly started to feel in the past week somewhat taken a back by what fans are now saying about Don and Glenn, which in some part is justified and in some part not.

The truth does lies somewhere in between but for once even thou I am a Don Henley fan I do have to stand up and be counted and stick up for the underdog which in this case is Don Felder which I know will surprise some people.

I can and I am sure many fans can recall a few instances when Glenn has shown his true nasty colours towards not only Don Felder but Bernie Leadon and Don Henley. At school we call that bullying. No doubt Don Felder like us all had his bad points but there is no way on earth does he deserve to be slagged off the way he has been especially by Glenn.
No doubt Glenn is proud of himself because right now many fans like me are not proud of him as an Eagle.

Though I'm sure it will give some a twisted satisfaction, I did remove a comment that insulted everyone who posts on this site. If you can't play nice, you don't get to play.

February 27, 2013 | Registered CommenterEaglesfans

I rarely ever comment here. I have no clue why I felt the need to voice an opinion on anything to do with Felder. It was a strong opinion and I could have probably worded it nicer. I do think he's talented and I realize some people hear the music first instead of the lyrics. I just really hoped this discussion wouldn't include name-calling. I am proudly clueless but the other thing was extremely offensive. Seems like I commented on something a few years ago that ended up the same way. Might have been the same insult because I seem to recall Googling it before to see what it meant. Not saying anything bad about the site or its admins - you guys are really awesome and obviously can't control what people say. Policing children all day and then comments - seriously, y'all should get a medal. Just really re-thinking how I want to connect with Eagles Fans. I'm cool with being told someone thinks I'm dead wrong. I'm not cool with being called an offensive name over who is or isn't in a band I like to hear. I kind of hate using Facebook and it seemed to be mostly people drooling over Glenn. (I drool too but don't want details.) Is there a Felder-free zone on the message board? That's the cranky-making topic, right?

February 27, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterBusyBeingFabulous

Frey is a world class D-bag. Henley is such a hypocrite, a "liberal" focused on squeezing out as many millions as he can while screwing over others that h elped him get to where he is.
