Dallas Reviews

 Dr. G's Review

It's 1:14 AM CST and I just arrived home after the Eagles Friday night show in Dallas. While I had a few minor problems, the show was TERRIFIC and well worth the outrageous ticket prices.

To be as brief as possible, a few random thoughts that I haven't seen mentioned in other reviews. The five minute piece that airs on the video screens just before the concert was great. I understand why Infinity wants to promote their association with this tour. The sound was superb!!

The musical interludes that are used as a bridge between some of the songs were nice and anyone who doesn't think the horn section adds tremendously to the show is a fool. The horns and occasional violin helped provide the uumph! that made many of the classic tunes seem new and fresh again.

Someone in the band needs to tell Frey that he sounds like shit on "You Belong to the City." It was an embarrassment and I felt like it robbed the show of momentum. He sounded nice on many other tunes, but that one in particular was God-Awful! I think Steuart Smith did a remarkable job of covering Don Felder's licks note for note, but there was something very wrong about him playing a double-necked guitar on Hotel California. It's like Johnny Mathis singing "My Way."

I know this seems negative in tone. but I REALLY DID have a great time. How many times do you get the chance to travel back to Junior High and High School and relive those times? Music IS the soundtracks of our lives and the boys proved it with Gusto on Friday. In closing< I ask only one thing: Why isn't Don Henley regarded as the greatest lead singer in rock history? My god, the guy is in his mid-fifties and hearing him sing Wasted Time made the hair stand up on my arms.

Final verdict: A solid A+ and worth every penny.

My favorite part was...Joe Walsh's awesome guitar playing & Henley's "Wasted Time"

My least favorite part was....sunset grill by Henley

The band members were.....AWESOME!

The show made me feel.....like I was having one of those familiar good dreams

One thing I'll never forget is.....all of it!

Other comments .......The tour surprised me because they all sang a lot of each other's solo hits, kind of a blend of every member's musical talents. But then of course you can't have an Eagles concert without all the smash hits like Hotel California, Tequila Sunrise, Peaceful Easy Feeling, Already Gone, Take it to the Limit, Desperado, Lying Eyes, Life in the Fast Lane, and many more! Don Henley and Timothy Schmidt sound exactly the same as they did in the 70's, absolutely amazing & outstanding! Glen Frey can't hold the notes quite as long as he used to, and sounds a little more choppy, but the guy still sounds awesome! I mean hey, it's Glen Fry; on his worst day he could still outsing 95% of today's singers! Joe Walsh worried me at first. I mean, the guy is 55 years old and looks 65! He looked about half stoned & missed about 3 bars on "In the City", and I thought, "yep, he's all washed up," but after a break he came back with "Life's Been Good" and tore down the house! He followed it up with hours of awesome guitar playing, & ended it off with his smash hit "Rocky Mountain Way." Let me tell ya'll, this guy made the show! You can tell just by looking at the guy that he's burned too many brain cells in the past. His voice is a little more slurred, and he's got that dazed "not all the lights are on upstairs" look, but nobody, I mean nobody can hang with this guy when he tears it up on the electric guitar! His awesome playing, crazy antics, coupled with Henley, Schmidt, and Frey's unbeatable vocals made this concert well worth every penny! I'd go see them again in a heartbeat!

Matt: Fan Review

At the 8:00pm showtime I and three of my friends, that were with me, were amazed the arena wasn't even half full. We wondered if the showtime had changed, or if they hadn't sold out. Wrong. By 8:30pm the band came out
finally, and to a sold-out house. Started right in with The Long Run.

This was my third time to have seen the Eagles (Dallas '94 and Oklahoma City '95), and while I enjoyed the show, this was my least favorite. I really did not like the setlist. The songs I noticeably missed: Victim of Love, Pretty Maids, Heart of the Matter, Smuggler's Blues, Witchy Woman, and Seven Bridges Road. Witchy Woman and Seven Bridges Road were especially missed because I've never seen them play these songs. Oh well, you can't play 'em all I suppose.

The least impressive song of the night was In the City sung by Glenn Frey. I couldn't tell if the vocals weren't being mixed right or what, but it sounded as if either Frey was whispering the song, or his vocals were just shot. Very poor performance. He sang just fine most of the night (although at some points I felt as if he was saying the lyrics more than singing them), but that one song was just plain bad.

Henley sounded great as always, and his drum playing still good. No complaints there at all.

Walsh was a little quiet during the first set, but made more of a showing on the second set. He definitely added some energy to a somewhat lethargic show. The boys just didn't seem to have as much oomph as when I saw them in '94 and '95. Probably didn't help they'd played four shows in the previous five days. And of course, everyone gets older.

Schmidt: What little lead he sang, he sounded as good as ever.

Hole in the World was sang, and this song has really grown on me. Can't wait to see what else they've come up with in the studio.

Steuart Smith: I don't care what anyone says, Don Felder's absence was most assuredly noticed by me. Smith did not show the passionate play that Felder has. And while people say Smith played songs note for note, no he didn't. I noticed several changes in licks here and there. As a final judgment I say that Smith is a competent player, not a slouch, but not Don Felder. Felder's removal has left a hole to me.

I felt there was one too many encores. I think there was three. That's just too many on an already long concert. Two is plenty. Just play! However, during one, while playing All She Wants to do is Dance, Frey showed some great energy dancing in between playing keys, right along with the horn section. Too bad we couldn't have seen more of that from everyone throughout the show.

My final say: Still a great show to see, though I believe they've passed their peak as performers. In the studio, I'm sure they can still shine. That being said, I believe I've seen the Eagles for the last time. I'm still a big fan, and of course, if a new rockin' album comes out, I could change my mind!

Dan: Fan Review

My wife and I have traversed the country over the last two years, all the way from  Kansas City to Colorado Springs to Denver to Dallas.  Last week in Dallas was one of the three best we have been to.

As many of you know, Dallas is Don Henley's home.  From the opening song, The Long Run, it was apparent that Don felt at home with the crowd.  He continuously engaged the crowd in conversation , from comments about the new song, Hole in the World, to his pleasure at going to the local sandwich shop owned some 45 years by the now 82 year old owner (take that Subway!) to his leisurely outing in search of farm fresh tomatoes at the local farmers market.

Don's mood was infectious.  Glenn playfully switched the order in which he introduced additional band member, confusing the spotlight operators.  Joe chimed in by picking up a small stage flashlight and using it for spotlight duties.

The band's playful mood extended to the music.      Joe is awesome in a live performance.  He truly seems to thrive off the audience.  His powerful guitar riffs on Funk 49 and the nifty slide guitar on Rocky Mountain Way gave the crowd an instant shot of energy.  Glenn's voice sounded stronger than last year on such old favorites as Tequila Sunrise, New Kid in Town, and Lyin Eyes.  Timothy was , well Timothy, with the angelic voice making all the females swoon on I Can't Tell you Why, as I told you last year in Colorado Springs, my wife has had a crush on him for 30 years!  And my favorite, Don Henley is still the epicenter , would Hotel California have been the greatest rock song ever without his vocals? And my favorite part of this concert is Don singing Wasted Time,  It sounds as good as it did on the original album.

The Eagles are not a cheap ticket, however, I urge you to go any way you can.  These guys were the greatest American band of their time.  No one comes close in today's music scene.  Go now and you will come away with a lifetime memory.    We'll be there in California and Washington in August!
