Phoenix Reviews

Fritz's Review

I saw the concert last night in Phoenix and it was definitely the best concert I've ever seen! Everything in the sold-out America West Arena was perfect. It was exactly like I've been reading about but better! I have to disagree with alot of the fans writing in saying Joe steals the show. He did his part and it was a wonderful part. But, this is the Glenn and Don show.

Tim - Timothy had a sore throat but still sang wonderfully. He seemed to be having a great time. Gets the audience involved and demonstrates "real" interaction with the other band members.
Joe - Joe was Joe and jammed. He knows how to take center stage and retreat when he needs to.
Stuart - Good addition and played a nice guitar. Can country pick or rock jam when needed.
Don - Great voice and did a pretty darn good job on the drums and on percussion. Was very active but needs to smile.
Glenn - A fantastic front man with lots of cool and personality. His singing was right on and he has a great time throughout the concert. ("Who still likes country rock in Arizona?" "Standin' on the corner in Phoenix Arizona!") Personally I felt he stole the show. "You Belong to the City" was great in Phoenix........

Best songs: Wasted Time, Peaceful Easy Feeling, I Can't Tell You Why, Funk 49, Already Gone, Hotel California, Heartache Tonight.

Spend the money and go! The concert was fantastic!!!!!!!!!

Maggie's Review

My name is Maggie and I saw the show August 5, 2003 in Phoenix. My favorite part was the whole show-the band was prompt and played for three hours so I definitely felt I more than got my money's worth. It was great that they did all the classic band songs together and the fact that Joe Waslh, Don Henley, Glen Frye, and Tim Schmidt did their own pieces as well. It was like seeing four or five acts at the same time. The horn section was incredible- hang on to that sax player! I had never seen or heard Joe Walsh in person -he just about stole the show for me. I'll never forget the way he plays guitar.

Ted's Review

Standing on a corner in Phoenix, Arizona, such a fine sight to see. A sell
out crowd of 18,000 forty somethings ready to relive their youth on the warm
desert night of August 5, 2003. The Eagles began their west coast tour of
Farewell I (I'm already saving my money for Farewell VI in 2009) in fine
form. Yes, their voices don't quite hit the high notes of years past but
when these boys decide to harmonize, nobody does it better.

The crowd was energetic from the first chords of the opening song The Long
Run to the finale of Desperado. In between were highs and highers (there
were no lows). The added use of a horn section plus a variety of keyboards
let the night's songs receive the full lush treatment one gets from the
group's albums. A nice use of lighting effects on Wasted Time highlighted
the song's flavor and stood out as memorable.

Although it seemed Joe Walsh was just going through the motions during the
first few numbers, he hit his stride on a rocking version of In the City
and never looked back. Glen Frey and Don Henley traded off vocals admirably
with Henley having the stronger voice, but Frey doing the yeoman's work
load. Poor Timothy Schmidt had the misfortune of a throat malady, but he
can stand proud of his effort. The crowd was pleased with the old favorites,
however it was the band members' solo projects that put the audience on its
feet. Forget that peaceful easy feeling. This band can rock when it wants
to and appears to enjoy it more when it does.

Stage banter and choreography are hardly Eagle strong points (although Frey
and the horn section did conjure up some light hearted attempts during All
She Wants To Do Is Dance), but it mattered little. The strong song writing
skills shone brightly and the band appeared to have as much fun in
performing as the audience did in listening.

It was a concert you hated to have end. To still want more after 30 songs
says a lot. Going in, many questioned whether this tour is worth the high
price of tickets. In the long run, it was a bargain.

Bink's Review

The concert last night was very entertaining.  I'll try to keep the hyperbole to a minimum.  While I thought that over-all they sounded and played wonderfully, I do believe that this tour is beginning to wear on them a bit.  They really looked tired at the end of the show.  Of course, if I were doing what they are doing at their age, I would probably look tired too.

Don gave us a "Wasted Time" like I've never heard it before.  While I've always liked "Sunset Grill," it was never a must listen to me...until last night.  I have a new appreciation for that song.  Perhaps it's the little differences between live and studio but I enjoyed that song last night like I never have before.

The harmonies on "Hole in the World" were fantastic.  While I wholeheartedly agree that a third stanza is needed, that is still easy on the ears.  I didn't enter the "extra verse" contest here and I'm not much of a wordsmith but I would offer up this as a third verse.

I look around at the before and the after
Openly wonder if we've filled the space
I still can hear the crying and all the laughter
Ooh, what will be our saving grace?

There's a hole...

OK, enough of that...back to the concert.

Timothy succeeded quite well with both his songs despite a bout with sore throat/laryngitis.  The women just love this guy.  He is a pretty smooth dude.

Glenn was very good all night long.  However, I do have to agree with most of the media types when they say he needs to leave "You Belong to the City" at home.  Give us a "Heat is On," or how about a real surprise like "Lovers Moon," "That Girl," or "New Love."  The crowd was very appreciative of his "Take It to the Limit."

And before I get to Joe, let me just say this about Steaurt Smith.  I'm officially over Don Felder.  I'll always appreciate Felder for what he brought to the band, but Smith can flat out play.  And his confidence and stage presence (yes, I know it's very little) have improved greatly.  I will also say this--it seems to me that he's featured much more now than when I saw them in Denver in 2001.  Of course he was brand new, especially in the U.S., but he's really "one of the boys" now as far as I'm concerned.  Don has said that he's been contributing to the creative process during the making of the album.  If that is so, I hope Don and Glenn do the right thing and make him official.

Joe was...Joe.  And anyone who says he doesn't steal the show every night is not listening to what I'm hearing.  The crowd absolutely loves this guy.  He consistently draws the biggest cheers.  The Eagles will always be Don and Glenn but the band without Joe Walsh may as well change the name.

The backing members were all very competent and go along way to enhance the sound.  A lot of people don't like the different arrangements to certain songs but to me, that's one of the draws of the "live" experience.  I was particularly impressed with Will Hollis and Michael Thompson on keys.

The guys are not getting any younger and to me, it shows.  But they still put on a wonderful show, sound better than ever and I will continue to be entertained as long as they want to entertain me.

Other song highlights
One of These Nights...Always great live.
Walk Away/Turn to Stone...Both seemed to be toned down a bit and I was appreciative of that.  Stone was especially clear.  Not sure what I mean by that but it just seemed very clean.
Heartache Tonight is a great live song and I always enjoy when most of the audience doesn't recognize it from the intro.  Then, when it kicks in, it always generates a resounding applause.
Hotel California...I just don't think you can mess this song up.  From Reggae to Flamenco to Ska--just doesn't matter.  It's a great song and lends itself to the flexibility that which it's been used.
Rocky Mountain Way...Hey question.  In San Diego in '94, Joe uses the talk box and says "Happy Birthday...someone"  Who is saying HBD to?  Always a lot of fun and a must for every Eagles concert.
Take It Easy/Desperado...I think they've established that these two pretty much have to end the concert.  Both just great.

Jim's Review

My favorite part was Start to Finish.
My least favorite part was when they had to quite playing.
The band members were Joe, Glen, Don & Tim

The show made me feel terrific. My wife said she has not seen me this happy
in years.
One thing I'll never forget is the entire concert.
Other comments can not wait for Fairwell Tour II

Mil's Review

Awesome show.
Joe Walsh was at his best. 73/88, Joe!
The group blended extremely well.
Audio was just a tad loud but the America West arena audio system is not the best unless sitting in the main bottom floor. Couldn't understand anything anyone said.
But the music sounded just like the original CDs.
So thankful I got to see the show....was a dream come true.....never had seen them in person.

Dan's Review

The concert was amazing! It is hard to say what was my favorite part of the show. I really enjoyed Glen Frey singing Take It To The Limit. I also thought they did an extraordinary job with Desperado, One of these nights, Lyin' Eyes, Tequila Sunrise, Wasted Time and New Kid in Town. As you can tell I especially enjoy the ballads. I thought Joe Walsh did a great job with Rocky Mountain Way and an out of this world performance of Turn To Stone. I didn't have a least favorite part of the show. I thought that I wouldn't like James Dean, but they did a great live performance. The band members seemed to be having fun on stage, especially Joe Walsh and Glen Frey. Glen was dancing during Henley's song All She Wants To Do Is Dance; it was hilarious.  Timothy B. Schmit struggled with I can't tell you why and Love will Keep Us Alive because of what I believe he said was throat condition. He hung in there though and still delivered worthy performances.  The guitar player that took over for Don Felder was also great. He nailed all of the guitar solos perfectly. They made an excellent choice by picking him to replace Felder. The show made me feel great! I was on top of the world! The best band ever in the entire world is singing to me live! It was great!  A couple of things I will never forget is when Glen Frey forgot the  some of the opening lines to Take It Easy. He quickly recovered and no one seemed to mind. I also won't forget Glen dancing to All She Wants To Do Is Dance, Walsh's Helmet Cam was also memorable. I enjoyed every thing about the concert. Anyone that's an Eagles fan should really try to see them in concert, you won't regret it. Its worth every penny.

Mark's Review

My name is Mark and I just wanted to share my thoughts on the show in Phoenix Tuesday night. By far and away the best show I have ever seen. Not a down moment in the entire show and the running time of 3+ hours was incredible. I'm 27 and grew up listening to these guys from my parents (I'd like to thank them on that) and they have always been one of my favorites. They didn't disappoint here. Henley's vocals on Wasted Time was better than the album cut ( I liked his little pause when the fan yelled at the end). I'm glad they really showcased Joe in the second set. His guitar playing is still brilliant and his charisma gives this band a "cool" personality. Don, Glen and Tim's voices are all still phenomenal. I will definitely be back for Farewell 6 in 2009. It was a show I won't forget anytime soon.

Cheryl's Review

My 1st Eagles concert was in 1994; my 2nd was in 1995. The show in Phoenix
on August 5th was without a doubt the best of the 3. I have waited 8 long
years to see the Eagles again - more specifically - I have waited 8 long
years to see Don Henley!

He was awesome (as usual). Listening to him sing "Wasted Time" and "Sunset
Grill" was fantastic, but what really did it for me was "Desperado". Talk
about saving the best for last! To sing like he does AND play the
drums..."One Of These Nights" (the BEST Eagles song) and "Hotel
California" - need I say more.

Timothy B. Schmit was amazing. He sang "Love Will Keep Us Alive" and "I
Can't Tell You Why" as beautifully as he always does - in spite of a sore
throat!

Glenn Frey sounded great. I will always remember seeing him dance during
"All She Wants To Do Is Dance"! He was such fun to watch!

Joe Walsh looked so cool with his psychedelic jacket, blue pants and tennis
shoes. Typical Joe!! He sounded terrific on "In The City". I loved the
helmet cam. His best in my opinion was "Rocky Mountain Way".

Hats off to Steaurt Smith. He was phenomenal!

Thanks Don, Glenn, Timothy and Joe for a night to remember - it was the
best.

Together they are absolutely the best - they harmonize so beautifully
together. I love their new single "Hole In The World". It's classic
Eagles.
