The Eaglennium

The Eagles decided to celebrate the millennium by playing a show at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. This was an incredibly big deal and the media went nuts. Prior to this show, the band played two warm-up shows at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. We attended all three shows and while the one at Staples was very cool, the energy of the Vegas shows couldn't be beat. This is our collection of everything we have regarding that very special time.

The Buzz

With less than a month to go before the shows, there were still tickets left to sell. What better ways to fill the seats than to make a televised appearance, sponsor a contest/exclusive offer with a major internet force and give interviews to a major paper? That's just what they did!

The band appeared as co-hosts on CNN's showbiz today. Portions of that performance and the preceding press conference were used to promote a contest on mp3.com.

  • Read a transcript of the CNN interview

  • CNN's highlight page has photos, audio and video clips.

  • We've got some video clips of the show:

    • Clip 1--Discussions about getting the RIAA award.

    • Clip 2--Discussion about the NYE show and how verklempt Glenn is about it all

    • Clip 3--More discussion about the NYE show and doing Funky New Year and Please Come Home for Christmas.

  • View photos from the show.

  • Listen to the press conference that preceded the CNN show or read our sort-of transcript of it.

  • As they did before HFO, Don and Glenn each gave separate interviews to the L.A. Times' Robert Hilburn.  Read what they had to say about the upcoming concerts and the future of the Eagles.

Rehearsals

A few days before Christmas, fans got a present from the official Joe Walsh page: a chance to glimpse the Eagles rehearsing for their upcoming shows. A simple web page refreshed frequently allowing us to see Don Felder on his cell phone, Henley's sweat pants, Joe in fatigues and other rare sights. Sadly, the screen caps we made of this were lost years ago. It was so much fun, though, sitting around with other fans on IM as we watched the page refresh. We remember screaming, "Is that a big drum? Oh my God...that's a big drum."

Viva Las Vegas!

The sights! The sounds! The Strip! Las Vegas proved to be a great place to gear up for Eagles shows.

The Film

One highlight of the shows was the film shown during intermission. It was basically a salute to the century with an Eagle-y focus.

  • The Quotes.  If you haven't seen the film, let us explain a bit. The film was basically a montage of music and images from the century. News images. Popular Culture images. You name it, they showed it. Before transferring to each decade, a quote flashed up on the screen to set the stage. These are the quotes that were selected. You can just read the quotes.

  • The Songs. Probably one thing that made the film so awesome was the music Glenn and writing buddy Jay Oliver created to go along with the film. Each piece was inspired by the decade it was representing. Glenn and Jay really showed a talent for film scoring.  You may be interested in seeing the titles and credits for each song.

  • The Star Wars Thingy.  The introduction to the Eagles' self-deprecating bit. Very funny. Luke! I am you father!!!!!

  • Kind of Listen to It. Glenn played the movie at his Royal Oak show in 2000. There are people talking over it and the sound isn't the greatest, but it's better than nothing.

Thanks to Mr. Randy Edwards, the producer of the flick for his help with this.

Update

The concert on December 31st would mark the last time Don Felder publically appeared with the band and these shows (including a planned release of the video) would form a large part of the lawsuit that Felder filed against his former band mates.  The show was eventually released on CD as part of the Selected Works Box Set. Interestingly enough, though the shows say they were recorded December 31st, some of them are obviously from Las Vegas. Don denied this in an online chat, but it's kind of obvious that the recording of "All She Wants to Do is Dance" was from Vegas because Don inserted the line "...and gamble" after the title phrase.
