Don Henley Eco-Guy
These days, with
long gaps between recording projects, Don is known equally as an "eco-guy", a
champion of all things environmental, and as a musician. While Don supports many causes
with his checkbook, he has lent his celebrity to a few and it is those that we will
highlight here. |

For more information, visit the WWP website. |
Don is probably best known
for his work with the Walden Woods Project.
The Project's mission is to preserve endangered sites within the Walden Woods
ecosystem and to educate people on land-preservation issues. In order to complete this
mission, Don has made the media aware of the goals of the project, has raised
millions of
dollars and has given countless interviews. Two products of his efforts (both created to
raise money and awareness) are the celebrity Eagles tribute album Common Thread and Heaven
is Under Our Feet, a collection of environmental essays.

The
Thoreau Institute
is a logical extension of Don's work with the WWP. The
Thoreau Institute is an academic entity which is designed to support the study of Henry
David Thoreau, his work and his ideas. The center is home to the Henley library and
provides programs designed to aid teachers in passing on HDT to their students. The
Thoreau Institute has also jumped on the Distance Learning bandwagon and is seeking to
connect classrooms and scholars around the world via the Internet and teleconferencing.

Caddo Lake is a special place
for Don. Located just a hop, skip and a jump from where he grew up, this swampy,
Spanish moss draped series of lakes and bayous is a magical place. Don is seeking to help preserve
it and to create awareness about the specialness of wetlands. The Caddo Lake Scholars
Program (which we think has grown into the Institute) was designed for local universities
and high schools to implement wetlands education into their curriculum.
