Don
Henley's Most Embarrassing
Public Moments
Don Henley seems to have an image
problem. Many people seem to think he is serious, somewhat pretentious and somewhat
anal-retentive. It's true that Don does have a serious side, but there is another side to
him as well. He has a wonderful sense of humor, he's sensitive, and he can be kind of a
geek. It is to this side of Don (our favorite) that this page pays homage. This isn't
meant to pick on him, but rather, to show that he is human and loveable. |
The Billboard Awards, 1993
In giving a speech discussing the Walden Woods project and introducing a "Common
Thread" medley, Don garbled his lines, almost uttered the "f" word and
mentioned a breakfast treat. |

The Johnny Can't Read Video
This is Don's first video and you can see why his later videos don't feature him
"acting". Don portrays a teacher in a "futuristic" classroom. The
facial expressions are worth the price of admission as is his signature on the chalkboard.

Soul Train
This appearance probably belongs in an embarrassing hall of shame somewhere. Don, dressed
in a bolero jacket and wingtips, dances and grooves on the stage of Soul Train while his
numerous backup musicians cavort behind him. The choreography is embarrassing. Don's
lip-synching is embarrassing. Don Cornelius' interview with Don is embarrassing
("That was really funky, Don" "Thank you, sir"). The whole thing makes
us want to hang our heads in shame and weep just for watching it. |

Hell Freezes Over Drumstick Drop
In the video for the second night's taping of the MTV show, Don proves his amazing agility
and drumming technique by recovering a dropped stick at the end of Life in the
Fastlane. |

1st "Annual" Walk for Walden Woods
Don shows that his fashion sense and his choice of friends are not always "hip".
Here, while shaking hands with "Captain Planet" and wearing a cap that says
"Live Bait", Don sports an "interesting" array of sportswear. Don,
it's okay to show your legs. It really is! |

Bridge Benefit, 1986
This was the year that Neil Young's benefit for the Bridge School decided to go acoustic.
Don showed up with Danny Kortchmar, JD Souther, Jai Winding and Timothy B.
Schmit.
Something about the evening must have made them very nervous, because they come across as
quite, ummmmm drunk. By the end of the show, they were practically falling over each
other. Don even admitted to being nervous after an acoustic rendition of "Boys of
Summer" that quite frankly sucked. He said it was like, "...being up here in a
jock strap and socks." Thanks for the visual, Don. |

The Home Show with
Gary Collins
Don has many things to help Walden Woods. However, we feel that the most humiliating
thing he has put himself through for the sake of Thoreau's stomping grounds is this
appearance on The Home Show. In it, Don shows Gary Collins how to plant a tree. Garry's
interview is insipid. "Gee, Don, I didn't know that trees aspirate!"
"Uh Huh". |

The Modern
Drummer Cover
This is the antithesis of Mr. GQ. This was a bad hair day. This was a bad fashion day.
This was a bad fingernail day. Geeesh! We're hoping that jacket has either found happiness
as the upholstery a couch in a doctor's office somewhere, or that it has taken its
rightful place in fashion hell.

Christchurch,
NZ 1995
The man who talks so much about personal
dignity wore a towel on his head while singing "Desperado". We know it was raining and that Don was a little sick. We just love
this image because it's so cute (and pretty damn funny).
